Post by: Lanko on April 01, 2017, 04:52:23 PM
Hm, interesting!

So let's hunt, people! There are 10 clues for the theme!

EDIT: PUZZLE SOLVED!

Step-by-step without spoilers if you wish to find it on your own but need a little help at some point. Or just go to step 10 to find out the theme!

1. A demon god's birthday starts the hunt ( xiagan's title )
(First post on Member's Birthdays topic, check Atku's birthday)- http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/general-discussion/member-birthday-calendar/
2.
When the king was a prince, he didn't like spicy sauces
(First post on the King's Paws)- http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/general-discussion/the-tavern/msg49635/#msg49635
3.
You went way back in history, but not enough
(First post of Overlord on the forum) - http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/fantasy-book-discussion/the-black-prism/msg2/#msg2
4.
What's the third rule out of two?
(In the Forum News and Help section, in the thread Fantasy-Faction Forum FAQ) - http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/forum-help/fantasy-faction-forum-faq/
5.
Third rule: Don't take a bath in horse piss [RA]
Last post in The Gentleman Bastards Read Along http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/fantasy-book-discussion/scott-lynchs-gentleman-bastard-read-along/30/
6.
Best of fourteen
If you read the best short story of 2014 on the main site ( http://fantasy-faction.com/2014/winner-of-the-april-2014-writing-contest ) and go to the comments section, there's a post by xiagan saying : *Doc is a title* [this is part 9 of the April’s Writing Contest’s Scavenger Hunt] @Doctor_Chill title is hint 9, but that doesn't give us hint 7, unless hints 7 and 8 do not exist and we go directly to 9.
7.
Hint 7 does not exist
8.
Hint 8 does not exist
9.
What is 2 5 1's 10th?
2 5 1 is a code for letters, meaning... Bea. Bea's 10th post is http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/fantasy-movies-video-games/bbcs-atlantis/msg74205/#msg74205
10.
Fortuna smiles on you (10)

Quote
An omen is a phenomenon that is believed to foretell the future, often signifying the advent of change. People in the ancient times believed that omens lie with a divine message from their gods.

These omens include natural phenomena, for example an eclipse, abnormal births of animals and humans and behavior of the sacrificial lamb on its way to the slaughter. They had specialists, the diviners, to interpret these omens. They would also use an artificial method, for example, a clay model of a sheep liver, to communicate with their gods in times of crisis. They would expect a binary answer, either yes or no answer, favorable or unfavorable. They did these to predict what would happen in the future and to take action to avoid disaster.

Though the word "omen" is usually devoid of reference to the change's nature, hence being possibly either "good" or "bad," the term is more often used in a foreboding sense, as with the word "ominous".
says wikipedia.
In a magical world, omens have a more dire significance and we think it's a neat topic for short story writing, because if you ask the question 'What could go wrong?' related to omens, diviners, foretelling and gods, the answer is usually: A lot.[/size]

I stumbled upon hint 9 and since it didn't give what it was, it can only be on the 10th hint!

ah.  duh.  i feel dumb now.

so, then, not back far enough?  is that the first post on the forum, do you think?

This entire clue hunt makes me feel both dumb and thick and unconnected to the forum lore. It's all entirely flying over my head.

me too.  but, i feel like this is a chance to learn some of it!

You can't learn lore by trying to find out clues that only make sense through known lore... xD

Good work @m3mnoch I was still looking for #4 on the 1750 and Time Travel contests!

Bathe in horse piss... RA means Rukaio_Alter? Or is a reference to Lies of Locke Lamora?

To @Nora

The asterisk in xiagan's post mentions to go to his first post to learn how to get the clues.

He meant that literally: his very first post on the forum  :P

i assumed rukaio.

tho, i just searched for "bath" in all his posts.  didn't turn up anything.  the one where the dragon bathes in mud, but that's it.  maybe digging for horses in his posts?

@m3mnoch , I think that RA might mean the Read Along section, as the other hints came from the different sections as well. xiagan particularly seems to like Malazan and is very active there...

EDIT: Half an hour later and I threw in the towel.

Between, searching these hints meant I didn't finish my story... I totally blame xiagan for that  :'(

I put all the hunting in this topic. Let's keep it here. :)

You threw the towel after the both of you had everything you needed? The horse piss clue is, as I see it, solved. You just haven't put it together. ;)
Still time to write that story, lazybug!  ;D

Edit: no, I haven't scrolled through pages and pages of Rukaio's posts trying to see something in blue.... ::)

Finally found clue 1 :-[ . Determined not to cheat and check out the spoilers YET

ETA I have managed unaided up to and incl the horse piss clue and now I am stuck, even with xia's latest encouragement, and have searched like I've never searched before and wracked my failing memory. Checking the lanko/m3m spoilers but they are no help either.

Small hint: has nothing to do with Rukaio Alter. ;)
Title: Re: [Apr 2017] - Scavenger Hunt - Spoiler Thread

Found hint number 6.

@m3mnoch , @Lady_Ty

It's in the last post in The Gentleman Bastards Read Along http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/fantasy-book-discussion/scott-lynchs-gentleman-bastard-read-along/30/

I got it right RA meant Read Along, but it was not the section, it was the title of a thread, and of course, a reference to Gentleman Bastards, and an edited post of its biggest fan  ::)

Hint number 6 is:

Best of fourteen.

Best story of 2014 was Artisan's Mask by ladygreen. Found nothing there or Best Story of 2014 voting thread, or on that specific contest threads as well.

Gemmell 2014 has nothing as well and we don't have a Best List of 2014... hm.

But if you read ladygreen's story on the main site and go to the comments section ( http://fantasy-faction.com/2014/winner-of-the-april-2014-writing-contest ), you see a post by xiagan:

*Doc is a title* [this is part 9 of the April’s Writing Contest’s Scavenger Hunt]

Yep, that's how I got hint 9 so early, I stumbled upon Doc_Chill's title while searching for other clues. But this still doesn't give hint 7, unless hints 7 and 8 do not exist and we go directly to 9.

If after that:

we jump directly to 9, then hint 9 is What is 2 5 1's 10th? (@Doctor_Chill title)

For mathematical curiosity, ten is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1, 2 and 5. Ten is the smallest noncototient, a number that cannot be expressed as the difference between any integer and the total number of coprimes below it.

Or maybe it has nothing do with math. Maybe it's a secret date. The 10th post on those threads?

Regarding clue 9
The clue is "What is 2 5 1's 10th?"
The numbers are spaced, suggesting they have meaning of their own which would be disrupted if pressed together, ie, they are not the same as "251". Also, I am pressed to think of something other than a person that would use a possessive apostrophe. It occurs to me that using a simple alphabet cipher, 251 spells "Bea", which is a shaky conclusion, but not without merit. Since Bea has not (to my knowledge) written in the contests, I thought it might be her posts or her likes.

The 10th thing Bea liked was a post by Jmack on Jane Austen & Goblins:
http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/work-to-be-critiqued/goblins-jane-austen-just-for-fun/msg96616/#msg96616 (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/work-to-be-critiqued/goblins-jane-austen-just-for-fun/msg96616/#msg96616)

The 10th like Bea received was for a post about the forum's Karma System:
"But... but... now it almost looks like the bad F site :'(
I only like one F site, the F-F one, of course :D
Eek, now there's a big red like button next to each thread! Please can we keep them just for posts (if we must really have it)?"

Bea's 10th posts appear unaltered and are as follows:
Counting backward, her 10th post was about butterflies:
"but... but... Schmetterling is also a nice word, all fluttery :-\
I mean, if you're looking at it, Butterfly? butter+fly :o
(in portuguese it's Borboleta)"

Counting from her joining the forum:
"I'm reading 'The long earth', by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter. I wanted to like it, but I just can't get into it... So, they're 2 english authors, but it's such an american book, it's putting me off.
I'll finish it, but I don't think I will bother with the next volume  :-\
Back to fantasy after this one... much better, hehe"

If this is a dead-end, my apologies.

Nope, it was in her 10th original post

Atlantis? Greek, Roman, Persian?

Or literally, Fortuna? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortuna

Fortuna (Latin: Fort?na, equivalent to the Greek goddess Tyche) was the goddess of fortune and personification of luck in Roman religion.

So, lucky characters? A story with a theme of luck?

Do you realise Overlord did 2  readalong's  of Locke Lamora?  and I found the wrong one and read ALL the posts twice Grr

Did you eventually find this one?

Re Doc Chill

I have struggled through, but got stuck on 2 and had to go to spoilers

horse piss and 251 because numbers always throw me and yet it was so simple once explained

Thanks for setting that up @xiagan and @ScarletBea it was fun and compelling and must have taken a while to set up. Thanks for keeping the April 1 tradition going.  It could have been very hard unless you had been around a while, so glad you gave a PM option.

Pathetic use of spoilers, hints (thank you, Bea), and laziness.
I will write a story one day entitled "The Uses of Sloth."
Which is not pornography, you snickering reprobates.
