Title: [Apr 2015] - Plot Twist! Werewolf, Vampire, Goat - Discussion Thread

A vampire, a werewolf and a girl. An easy formula for hundreds of bestsellers.
Most of them are novel length, though. Does that mean that it's not possible to write a good paranormal romance in short story format?
Of course not! And it's your job to prove it. A good love triangle doesn't need hundreds of pages. I have the feeling that 1500 words may just be enough. ;)

This month I want you to write a story about a romance containing a werewolf, a vampire and a girl. (The girl doesn't necessary have to be the love interest.)

Rules:

1. This can be prose or a poem.
2. Must be about a girl, a vampire and a werewolf.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
6. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
7. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
8. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
9. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol:

Entry will close May 1st 2015 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/%28apr-2015%29-wvg/%28apr-2015%29-werewolf-vampire-girl-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

April fools! Plot twists and/or surprising endings it is! :D

This often is a specialty of short stories and you find them there more often than in other forms of writing.
It's about time for you to try to write one. ;)
The most famous examples I can think of aren't in literature, though.
I guess most of you have seen one or more of M. Night Shyamalan's movies: The Sixth Sense, The Village, Signs, The Happening or She's All That are perfect examples of a cool plot twist - usually in the end of the story/movie.

So this month I want you to write a story containing one (or more, but too many will make the reader feel like riding a roller coaster and not everybody likes them ;)) plot twists and/or a surprising ending.

Instead of an inspiring picture you get one of my own short stories, self-pubbed in an anthology called "Fictional Times - a Fabulous Anthology of Wondrous Stories" a few years ago. [/end shameless plug]

Last one standing

I am the last one of a dying race.
I don't know why I'm writing this down, since nobody will ever read it, but it keeps me occupied and I have to talk to somebody – even if it's my diary.
I'm old. Really old. If you think about it, somebody has to be the last one alive. I don't know why it had to be me, but that only adds to all the other things I don't know, so it's not bothering me much. I always knew that our own stupidity and not some meteors, or big earthquakes would erase us from this planet but I'm surprised about the way it happened. There were so many possibilities: Nuclear war, self-inflicted climate change, lab-made viruses... I'm sure there were even more dangers we brought upon ourselves, but I'm no scientist, not even a learned man, and everyone I could ask is dead.
What happened is quite simple. Since math was always a favorite of mine, I’d like to see it as an easy arithmetic: Take some businessmen who want to make a lot of money, add some mad scientists, subtract their conscience and multiply it with bad luck and quite some 'Oops, we didn't take that into account'. Done!
There's a simple plant with astonishing features: Bitterweed, a.k.a. Ambrosia artemisiifolia. I mentioned above that I'm not a learned man and I stand to that. But since you could say that this yellow-blossomed plant was our nemesis and our doom, everything concerning this plant is absolute basic knowledge. Anyways, back to my story. Once the earth got warmer, it spread like wildfire. And one single plant can release up to one billion pollen. That was a problem back then, because it was ultra allergen - six pollen per cubic meter air was enough to cause hay fever and Asthma and they flew hundreds of kilometers far. Sounds pretty frightening, eh? Of course science got it under control pretty fast, but once it did, no one bothered anymore to remove the plants. They soon were a common sight in most countries and only the yellow dust on the windows and roofs was annoying.
Now we take two scientists from our arithmetic above. They are, as mentioned, mad and without a conscience. One is a biologist and one a geneticist. Unfortunately they were employed at the worlds largest distributor of sperm (yeah, sounds pretty weird) and in vitro fertilization, a corporate group with sperm banks all over the world and as many clinics, which are specialized in IVF.
They already make a lot of money but apparently not enough. Every normally conceived child is costing them money, they think. And then they have their groundbreaking idea. Why not try to make mankind more dependent on our services? Sounds crazy, but that's what they did. They genetically modified that plant so that its pollen had a new property. You just had to inhale a few and they discharged to your upper respiratory tract, in addition to their normal psycho-active proteins, some others which made men, not all of them but enough, infertile.
It took us a few years to notice the slowly growing infertility and some more until the corporation's big secret leaked over the tubes. By then, it was too late. We already knew from plants like Corn or Rapeseed that it was impossible to protect normal plants from genetically modified plants and the new GMO Ambrosia spread over the world. Efforts were made to exterminate Ambrosia, but in vain.
What the mad scientists didn't take into account was their own storages running low after a while. Once it got out that fertile sperm was a limited resource, people panicked and what was left got destroyed in riots and wars.
And here I am. One of the last to hatch. Writing my story down and wondering if the next sentient and self-conscious beings on this planet will be wiser than we dinosaurs have been.

Rules:

1. This can be prose or a poem.
2. Must contain a plot twist and/or a surprising ending.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.

How didn't I see that coming!!!!

I was already writing a reply to express my reluctance to write about the first theme.  ;D I would have written about it, but this is much better.

Good one, Xia.

Very much an evil genius!
I was thinking that when I'm close to getting my very special title of 'regular voter' (hint hint, reminder :D) I won't want to read any of those stories except to laugh at them :-[

Anyway - bad Xia, you made me laugh out loud in the office!!!
(I know - maybe I just shouldn't be here during work hours anyway, hehe)

And here I was ready to pull out my old Twilight fanfic...

Nah, plot twists galore! Don't know how the hell I'm going to pull this one off in 1500 words, but I think I'll find a way.

Maybe you actually should post your Twilight fanfic and that's the twist.

My 10 step story of membership to Fantasy Fiction so far:
- Joined about a week ago.
- Got hooked on this section and blitzed out a short story yesterday (which I really enjoyed doing)
- Refreshed forum all day with great anticipation of what WVG meant as April's topic.
- Read elaborated title 5 mins ago.
- Saw picture in the overscroll.
- Fumbled for the account details to learn how to unsubscribe.
- Decided before I was too hasty that I'd see if the topic was really that bad and whether I could stomach fixing Twilight.
- Concluded that I don't have that much time on this earth and went back to find that blasted unsub button.
- Noticed the word April Fools in the follow up post.
- Gave xiagan an internet thumbs up for legitimately making me laugh.

Apparently dead, since the story was called Last One Standing. ;) Or undead? Mhm...

The girl dinosaur is the offspring of werewolf and vampire bloodlines.

@D_Bates (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40257): I strongly advised @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) to choose a really good picture at the top of this thread. Jmacyk is a true fantasy writer! Just like his characters, he gets into fights any time he possibly can, including on the way home ;D (probably coming from the tavern, after a pitch of ale and calling out to the other patrons about their weapons)

You're not alone here, but I will go down that road if only to smite those who would so callously toy with our emotional imagination. Ask and thou shall receive. Expect to see a rollercoaster of steamy monster romance here by the end of the week.

I'm just wondering: now that April 1st has come and gone, should the title of the section be changed?

I'm thinking of those people who don't really participate in the forum except to submit a story, and if they see "[APR 2015] - Werewolf, Vampire, Girl" in the title they might just quickly move along and not even open the thread to see it's a joke.
(then again, it might serve them right, not to bother to read, hehe)

It occurs to me that @Raptori (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=38840) can simply re-submit March's story about the Kid.

If you all see a new member named "Atku God of Goats" submitting a story, you'll know what's going on.  ;)

Took me a while to decide on an idea and still not completely sure it's "Twist-worthy," but I'm going with it anyway.

Because I like teasing people, think this (http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/278/5/f/frostiron_courier_by_sprias-d6pc164.jpg) with the themes of Peter Orullian's The Hell of It. Now I just need to find time to write it down and hope I can squeeze all this under 1.5K.

My issue is that I have too many story ideas for this one and they're just ideas, not proper plots, the bloody plot bunny goes into hyperdrive at this time of year. She was born about now and there's a lot of chocolate around, they live on chocolate, so she gets very active.

I will try to write one as well. So 13.

But I still don't have any decent ideas for the plot (or for the twists within it). :(

The increasing popularity of the contests is a good thing, I think. That means there are more votes, and that in turn means some stray ones might come my way.  ;D

EDIT: Correcting my haphazard English. And I only counted 9 story submissions so far, but still, they have accumulated incredibly fast. :)

Ok so.... Just a question here... I'm in the middle of writing my short story for this, and it's not like the previous one, easy flowing and written in a day. So before I spend too much time torturing my brains out, I might as well inquire:
Just how much gross stuff is allowed? As in real, downright gross, not just gory stuff and foul mouthed villains taking it out.
I will reduce the impact by keeping it a bit abstract or maybe dilute the story for this submission, but are there themes that are outright forbidden? Or can I just submit it with a warning?

Probably one for Xi, but I'll have a go. As long as it's not genuinely offensive (i.e: pornographic) and it all fits in the story I don't think we'd have an issue with it. We're all adults here. Maybe just put a warning that it contains that sort of stuff.

Ok that's a thing though. Can a rape happen and be described to an extent (so we realise what's happening) without qualifying as pornographic? Maybe I'll just water it down a bit just to stay safe, it's a pretty vicious twist I'm planning out...  ::)

Considering last month we had a blood eagle, multiple knifings and a kissing leprechaun, I'd guess that should probably fly as long as it's kept within the realms of good taste.

On a less rapey note, I've just come up with a fantastic idea for my story this month. I don't want to spoil it too much, but I basically make the fourth wall my bitch.

(In hindsight, that probably was a bit spoilery actually. And it didn't exactly help make things less rapey...... I should probably stop typing now and go to bed before I dig myself even deeper.)

Whoaaaa!! Can't believe I just posted my story. It's half past midnight and I've been working on wrapping it up for a few hours. It's been wrecking my brain ever since I decided to write it and I'm so utterly relieved that it's done... Unlike my rogue story that came out of my head in a day, this has been taking me days and countless rewriting.
I'm too inexperienced a writer to know really if such contrast is common. I guess it's often different as you force yourself into topics you'd never have chosen without the contest?
I haven't picked up any new book or seen any movie beyond the GoT first two episodes, I was so engrossed. Urk, I'm glad it's out. I'll probably edit the hell out of my ending by tomorrow breakfast time.  :P

I'm feeling pleased with my so called "watering down". It was an exercise in itself to try and avoid too explicit connotations.

I'm now free to go and read y'all!!! Yay!

Writing can be very different, sometimes it flows, sometimes it needs to get wrestled. So yeah, maybe you got the two extremes now and will know that it can be all in between. :)

I'm okay with any content as long as there is a warning for people who have issues with sex, violence, blasphemy or goats.

Yeah. Also, as a reader, when you know there is a twist coming is very hard for a writer to completely blindside you without going all Deus Ex Machina on yo ass. Especially in a short story.

Yes, let's please keep the spoilers off this thread :(
This is mostly for 'discussion of the subject', not 'discussion of the stories' - that will come later on the Critique thread, once the month is finished/submissions closed.

Didn't think that was much of a spoiler, more just a general thumbs up. Wouldn't want to influence voting unduly though. Anyone want me to edit it out?

As a thought... maybe the critique thread should run concurrently? Having a bit of discussion as we went along would help me remember which story was which (something I found tricky when it came to voting last time).

Well as someone who hadn't read it, I didn't read it as a spoiler. I do think it'd be a good idea to have two discussion threads though, one containing spoilers and one without.

Missing some 490ish words to be valid. Which in itself is a shame. Each time I go back on the topic to read a new story, I pass it and go "Ouh, who the hell got 9 likes on their short?" then "Uuuuurrrh, *facepalm*"

Please could Atku's story come back after the contest, maybe on this discussion thread? I would like to read it again .

I'm so glad I read everything the moment it got released. Otherwise I'd be twisted, having to read it all at once.
Kudos to everyone who posted btw :)
Double kudos to our split-hoofed "newcomer", we are looking forward to more works from your hand. Your style resembles a lot one of our friends @Jmack (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=37094)

Gosh, I don't read them all at once!
That would be a pain (especially reading them on the screen) - I take my time throughout a few days...

The trick is to have a good scoring sheet 8)
I can't wait for this month to be frozen so I can start reading...

I read them as soon as they come up and scribble a comment to remember what each title is about then when they are all in I read them again and final score.

Finally managed to write & submit a story for this month's contest, and I've voted for the Rogues stories.

Now I can start reading April's stories, while trying to be as unprepared for possible twists as I can manage  ;D

@xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) what exactly does this mean:

Entry will close May 1st 2015 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

Does that mean midnight April 30th or midnight May 1st (or something in between)? Just want to make sure, since we'll be cutting it fine with our story this month!  ???

You're only 8 hours ahead of us, not too bad compared to the people in the US! If that's right then it'd be evening on May 1st for us, which would give us a little breathing space.  :)

The first time Atku posted, there was a valid story. I moved it to the Review section, and replaced it with a brief message. Maybe folks who read the earlier entry aren't aware it's been moved.

Ok, that does explain everything. Just raises the problem of allowing the same person to post more than one story via different accounts.

This made me wonder if we could one month allow for anonymous double publications, with people getting bonus points if they can guess who wrote what.
While I was considering such impossibilities, I imagined we could set up a story system in which the fastest writer gets to start with about 500 words, and then the first person to call dibs on it gets to write the next 500 words, ect, creating a massive exquisite cadaver. But it'd be so hard to vote on that and such a potentially long process that it'd be a topic in itself... Ok and now I need to go back to my writing.  ::)

I believe the record is 17, set with the Rogues challenge in March. If Atku's entry has been removed then that's out, and we only have 15. Why wasn't it valid? Did it not make word count? There's nothing that says someone can't enter two stories for any given month. So long as they're clearly different stories.

There is a misunderstanding. By Atku's stories I was only thinking of his one liner "caught you watching" because it's all I ever saw in the submission thread. I didn't know there had been a full story.

Sorry Nora. There was originally a full story in there, but obviously Jmack thought it was a bit much to have a joke story in there, so removed it. Shame, because for a joke it wasn't a bad story.

I think the problem would be that people'd be biased to vote for Atku cuz of the joke rather than the actual quality of the story. Or they'd at least be influenced by it.

I'd say the opposite. Aktu's submission wouldn't be that funny because it would be anonymous, missing the point of even creating the new profile.
I'd vote against multiple submissions. It'd be unfair to both slow writers and voters, giving way more weight to whoever could pull 2 or 3 stories in the month and multiplying the amount of things to read to unmanageable amounts.
Multiple submissions, non-anonymous, could be a thing I guess if the theme ever was "flash fiction" allowing the same person to publish one to three 500 words max story, in series or independently. So that the final amount of material would stay manageable.
I honestly believe that multiple submission would lessen the quality of publications, even if anonymous. I mean, some might pull it off, but I myself spent a long time polishing my last story, and trying to fit two in the month certainly would have degraded the final quality.

All of that being my humble opinion.

I really hope people don't start getting all complicated with the Monthly Writing Contest, ending up ruining it.

I think it has worked fine, and we almost always get a different winner each month which is great. I don't think there would be any problem with considering Atku's submission, as there are no rules (I think?) against multiple submissions. Joke or not, it took @Jmack (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=37094)'s time and effort to come up with it, so it should be equally considered if he wants  :)

Meanwhile, I'm very curious to see next month's theme  ;D

Funny, I always assumed you'd only be allowed one submission per month. A couple of times we had two ideas that were pretty much equally good, would've written them both if we had thought it was allowed. Not sure if it's a good idea really, one submission per person feels a lot fairer to me.  :-\

One submission makes sense. I could see myself getting carried away with a case of the "ooo..ooo...what about..?"s if I could do more. Equally, one of the reasons I've posted to this forum's comps and pretty much nowhere else, is the relaxed attitude. I think a gag entry now and then is fine, surely no one takes it too seriously?
I more worried about the spread of Goat fever. There seems to be an awful lot of goat related stuff in people's profile summaries. Perhaps we need to hire a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra) to have a cull?
I mean, @Atku can't win if he's lying bloodless and drained in a Puertorican field now can he?

And out of this lovely Atku mess, that should be the one and only tweak: one story per RW member per month. Let's let everything else stay as it is, because... i think it's working. We only have to look at the number and quality of sips missions to see that.

It was hardly a mess, no need to feel bad! ;) It only brought up some different perspectives and allowed us to debate some of the details of the contest, nothing else!

Having said that, who knew goats could cause such a fuss in an online fantasy forum?  ;D

I think that jokes are funny ( :o ) and should be allowed to a certain extent.  ;D

As for the multiple submissions part... I think a few "extra" submissions in a month would be okay, but if the amount of entries started to grow too high (let's say two- or threefold), at least I would be hard pressed to read them all and vote. And I wouldn't vote if i had only skimmed them through. So I think that the only working (and fair) solution would be to limit the submissions to one per RW member (right-wing member?  ;) :P ) as Jmack put it.

For me it's difficult to get even one entry done in a month, or so it would seem: I still need to write a few hundred words for my story, and then spend a few hours molding it into an acceptable form. Cutting it close? That's what I do.  :)

We probably wouldn't bother finishing it actually, since it's only halfway through the first draft at the moment. If we can't get it ready in time then there's little point wasting time on it when we have so much other stuff to do. Thanks anyway though!

So no joke submissions is what you're getting at there? I don't think I'd personally ever have two good enough ideas in the one month, but if someone does and they're prepared to go to trouble of working them up and entering them, I have no issue with multiple submissions from the one person.

So no joke submissions is what you're getting at there? I don't think I'd personally ever have two good enough ideas in the one month, but if someone does and they're prepared to go to trouble of working them up and entering them, I have no issue with multiple submissions from the one person.

I don't get it. Because there is a vote, allowing some to have twice as much coverage or more just makes the contest unfair. But we're also voting for best story so why wouldn't someone write two, post up the best one and eventually get the other critiqued?
What if one day on 15 submissions 5 people write two story and 20 1k~ words shorts penalize everyone by making voting a struggle for some people? I really don't see why we'd make thing uneven in the contest while there is a critique thread for prolific writers?

One story per person (not per account) will be in the rules from now on.

I'll elaborate later why I too think that multiple entries are hurting everybody involved.

Not that it matters, but I'm glad that will be the rule: I also agree with one person-one story in this contest.

I'm totally cool with one story per person.

One person, one story:

It hasn't been in the rules but I think one person, one story is ideal. Two persons, one story may work. One person, two or more stories is a bit much.

I think it is mostly bad for the one who submits several stories. It's similar to having another account. If they'd use both frequently it would take them much longer to reach the next rank and to get a decent amount of likes, because they'd have to divide the total amount of posts written and likes got by two.

Same goes for the contest. I'm certain that neither story has a chance to win, because the limited amount of votes get spread about one story more, reducing the average amount of votes every story gets. And most people who realize that two stories are from one person won't vote for both of them.

The writing contest is to hone your skill in writing and I think a part of that is deciding if a story is worth or not and if not to improve it until it is or discard it and write another. If everybody would submit as many stories as they liked, the quality would drop a lot and nobody would read them anymore.

Everybody should submit one story and let it be the best they can come up with. And if three drafts fall by the wayside, their story has already won its first contest and is ready for the next. :)

I will wait a couple of weeks until I start reading - waiting on April's results was hard enough, hehe...

I need to train my brain to *not* expect a plot twist - so I can be surprised ;)

Congratulations all writers that was a very good selection and I have managed to narrow it down to four I thought topped and done my voting duty, but you made it very difficult again.

One big question to whom it may concern, and now we all know who you are,  - what on earth did poor Little Red Riding Hood do to you in your past life???

If there is a shrink among us he may be concerned about a paranoid obsession rife in this corner.

Should I feel concerned?  ::)

Wow.  Great stories.  Great twists.

I read all the entries.  Went back and read the ones I liked again.  Picked two winners, then struggled to narrow down one more.  Had my three.  Went to vote.  Realized I could pick four.  :)

And, now I have to go edit my May submission one more time.  (First draft was 2400 words.)
