Title: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - Who's reading with us?
Post by: Arry on March 08, 2015, 10:18:01 PM
In April, we will be reading The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

Somewhere within our crowded sky, a crew of wormhole builders hops from planet to planet, on their way to the job of a lifetime. To the galaxy at large, humanity is a minor species, and one patched-up construction vessel is a mere speck on the starchart. This is an everyday sort of ship, just trying to get from here to there.

But all voyages leave their mark, and even the most ordinary of people have stories worth telling. A young Martian woman, hoping the vastness of space will put some distance between herself and the life she‘s left behind. An alien pilot, navigating life without her own kind. A pacifist captain, awaiting the return of a loved one at war.

Set against a backdrop of curious cultures and distant worlds, this episodic tale weaves together the adventures of nine eclectic characters, each on a journey of their own.

And here are the chapter breaks.

Week 1: Stop reading when you see the chapter title 'Port Coriol'
Week 2: Stop reading when you see chapter title 'The Last War'
Week 3: Stop reading when you see chapter title 'Heresy'
Week 4: Finish

So, who's reading with us?

Well since I always sulk when my choices don't win, I probably should join in now one of my choices have won!

Can people check if they are still able to purchase this?

When we voted it in, the self published ebook was available in both the UK and the US. I saw that it had been picked up by a publisher, but didn't realize that the existing ebook version would go away.

I went to buy it today (instead of buying it immediately like I evidently should have) and the ebook is gone. There is a preorder for the published version which will not be available until August. I checked the UK, but I can't tell the availability for the ebook due to territorial rights. The physical book looked to also have an August date.

So, if those planning to read can check if they are able to get this book (or let us know if you already have it), that would be great. Unless I find a way to get a copy (which looks like it might be hard/impossible), I am going to have to sit this one out. If no one is able to get it at the moment, I propose sliding Pratchett to April.

I purchased ebook when we first selected it. I'm okay moving Pratchett to April.

Amazon.de lets me still buy the ebook (13 Euros) but the hardcover isn't available before August and there is no paperback.
I don't like buying eBooks (I mostly read short stories, novellas and the occasional ARC on my tablet), so I'd prefer to wait until the physical copy is out. That's 144 days to go, though.

Which is A Long Wait for a Small, Brave Volume.

In the UK the ebook is available now (and would suspect it is in America or the publishers are just opening themselves up to piracy) but no physical copy till August. But before it was always the case there was no physical copy available.  Double check the existence of an e book in America.

It is actually quite common for ebooks to be available in one country and not the other. Just to appease you, here are screen shots of my search for the title at amazon, my search for the author at amazon and then another search at Barnes and Noble. The older cover from the self published version is not available (it used to be the Kindle version, now it says paperback) and the newer one is August.

Sorry. Didn't mean to be abrupt. That opens up another debate - as surely it is just opening yourself up to piracy if people want a book and can't buy an e-copy. I believe you.

Surely then we have to postpone this to August, and then do Pratchett in April, Kitschies in May, and just choose June and July themes closer to the time?

Will do. Though, may do September (the book releases mid August). Hopefully everyone is OK with that, and again, sorry :(

Totally okay. And absolutely not your fault.

Ah you guys were just too late, it was taken off Amazon on March 22nd folllowing the publication deal. It is back on now but for £9.99.

I read it a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it, I'm sure you all will as well!

I'm guessing that you are in the US. That's why we are postponing the read because the US has no available version (as I found out when I went to buy it). It was originally self published, but is being published in August with Hodder and Stoughton. They made an ebook version available in the UK now (before the official release), but the US has to wait. They took the self published ebook down between running the poll (it was there initially) and now.    :-\

It will come eventually though  ;D

It showed back on US Amazon for the Kindle and I went ahead and bought it. I think we'll probably be good, but want to double check publication dates and don't have time to do so right now.

Honestly as long as the ebook remains available, I am fine with it right now. I know we typically require a physical release, but I'm willing to make an acceptation.

Hi, everyone!

Becky's UK publisher, Anne, here. Just to clear things up: the ebook is currently available in the UK and will be published in hardback on 8 August. The US ebook will become available through Long Way's US publisher in August, though I don't know the exact date, and they'll be publishing their hardback edition a few months later.

We're all incredibly excited to see how much you have been enjoying Long Way!

The US Kindle version is actually available now for some reason (I know when I checked previously it was planned for August). I  am going to go ahead and green light this for September. There is always Book Depository for physical copies. I know normally we try to make sure things are released in the US and the UK, but we made an exception for this in the initial voting when it was still ebook only, and I am going to carry that through to this round.

It is, but there is not an August read. We only had 4 people vote in our last poll, a 2 way tie. Participation has been kinda low, so we just decided to take a month off (we never have as many participants as we do voters, so that voting turnout really didn't bode well for the month of August's discussions)

Ah ok, that's fair. I've noticed this month's read doesn't seem to be getting as much discussion as usual. Maybe having a month for people to catch up a bit with non-bookclub reading will help, and then there'll be lots of people joining in with future months.  :) I really need to be better at looking out for the votes. I keep forgetting and then missing them!

Really looking forward to The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.  :D

I tore through this book rather fast, really really enjoyed it, so am hoping for a good turn out this month!!

Also, I thought about seeing how people would feel about me posting all the discussion threads now. People can post to them as they advance in the book. If people are worried this won't work, I know in the past some people have said they have felt "left out" of discussions when they were getting posts before they were able to read, I can hold onto my comments for each week. Just thought I'd check :)
