Fantasy-Faction’s Most Anticipated Books of 2021

How do you decide which books people are most looking forward to reading next year? You ask them, which is what we did in our Facebook group. Any of the 19,000 members were free to vote and/or add the book they were most looking forward to reading. The only caveat, each book had to have a release date in 2021 on Goodreads!

Below, we present the results in order by expected release date. We have included covers and/or blurbs when available.

To no surprise, a lot of them are sequels, from established authors with a large following, and master storytellers all. However, there are some debuts *cough cough*, some authors you may not have experienced before, and some you thought you really should be reading something by but haven’t taken the chance yet. Well, let us add to your tbr pile once again (we do see that as our main duty and responsibility).

Enjoy!

A Court of Silver Flames (A Court of Thorns and Roses #4) by Sarah J. Maas

February 16, 2021 by Bloomsbury Publishing

A Court of Silver Flames (cover)Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she’s struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can’t seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.

The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre’s Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta’s orbit. But her temper isn’t the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.

Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.

Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance—and healing—in each other’s arms.

One of those three, Karsa Orlong, is now deemed to be a god, albeit an indifferent one. In truth, many new cults and religions have emerged across the Malazan world, including those who worship Coltaine, the Black-Winged God, and—popular among the Empire’s soldiery—followers of the cult of Iskar Jarak, Guardian of the Dead.

A legion of Malazan marines is on the march towards Silver Lake. responding to intelligence that indicates the tribes beyond the border are stirring. The marines aren’t quite sure what they’re going to be facing but, while the Malazan military has evolved and these are not the marines of old, one thing hasn’t changed: they’ll handle whatever comes at them. Or die trying.

Scarred by the deeds of Karsa Orlong, he intends to confront his god, even if he has to cut a bloody path through the Malazan Empire to do it. Higher in the mountains, a new threat has emerged, and now the Teblor are running out of time.

The long-feared invasion is about to begin. And this time it won’t be three simple warriors. This time thousands are poised to flood the lands of the south. And in their way, a single legion of Malazan marines.

By Geoff Matthews

G. R. Matthews began reading in the cot. His mother, at her wits end with the constant noise and unceasing activity, would plop him down on the soft mattress with an encyclopaedia full of pictures then quietly slip from the room. Growing up, he spent Sunday afternoons on the sofa watching westerns and Bond movies after suffering the dual horror of the sounds of ABBA and the hoover (Vacuum cleaner) drifting up the stairs to wake him in the morning. When not watching the six-gun heroes or spies being out-acted by their own eyebrows he devoured books like a hungry wolf in the dead of winter. Beginning with Patrick Moore and Arthur C Clarke he soon moved on to Isaac Asimov. However, one wet afternoon in a book shop in his hometown, not far from the standing stones of Avebury, he picked up the Pawn of Prophecy and started to read - and now he writes fantasy! Seven Deaths of an Empire coming from Solaris Books, June 2021. Agent: Jamie Cowen, Ampersand Agency. You can follow him on twitter @G_R_Matthews or visit his website at www.grmatthews.com.

  1. I see a couple new ones worth looking at, and I already planned to get The Girl And the Mountain from the library…and maybe I’ll try the new Gentlemen Bastard, if it actually comes out, but it’s been so long since the last one I don’t think I’ll really be able to get into it without a reread I don’t have any interest in. A Desolation Called Peace might need a look as well; I quite liked the first one in that series.
I’ve read other books of Maas’s and Brett’s in those worlds, but I’m definitely not going to do any more. I found the (previous) endings of those series not at all enjoyable.
I’ll be saving my time/money for the Star Wars The High Republic releases–I only wish I could ask for them as gifts, but with a birthday falling at the end of the year, every must-have out before, like, June is gonna get sprung for 😀

  2. Chomping at the bit for The Wisdom of Crowds & not listed here A J Smith’s sequel to The Glass Breaks, The Sword Falls. It’s due at the beggining of March.
