Cover for ‘The Thorn of Emberlain’ by Scott Lynch revealed

With the release of The Rebublic of Thieves in 2013, Scott Lynch and Gollancz assured us that we wouldn’t have any further 6 year waits between Gentleman Bastard novels.

Initially we were told that The Thorn of Emberlain would hit shelves around Autumn of 2014, so when that date sailed by we admittedly panicked. Scott assured us though that it was just a normal writer thing – missing a deadline narrowly – and that it wouldn’t be more than about 6 months to a year overdue… Indeed, his publishers Gollancz have since revealed it’s on their 2015 publishing schedule.

Knowing Scott’s intricate plots, polished prose and dedication to perfectionism we thought we could just about handle the extra wait… however,  today, Gollancz have re-lit our impatience by revealing the cover and mannnnnn is it brilliant. Check this out:

Great work from cover artist Alejandro Colucci who proves that Scott’s heading in quite a new direction for this one, right? Well, like Abercrombie, it seems Scott likes to play around with his genres. We’ve seen the Heist in Lies, Pirates in Red Seas and Political style plot in Thieves Republic – now it looks like we are onto Knights! Indeed, Scott spoke briefly about this in 2013, check it out:

The Thorn of Emberlain, the fourth book in the Gentleman Bastard sequence, picks up about half a year after The Republic of Thieves and finds Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen trying to get back on their feet with a major con. They’re trying to sell the services of a non-existent mercenary company to the besieged city-state of Emberlain, hoping to escape with the hiring fees before the chaos of the Vadran civil war overruns Emberlain. Naturally, things don’t go according to plan…

What do you guys think?

  1. I am very excited for this release. Scott Lynch skyrocketed to become one of my favourite authors once I had got my hands on Lies. Add in the great genre jumping he’s done with the rest of the series, and I cannot wait to see what he does in this one.

  2. Finished Republic of Thieves the first of January and I cannot wait for this! Lynch has become one of my favorite writers. The characters are some of the best I’ve read about.

  3. Absolutely cannot wait for this. Just one problem for me: if that’s supposed to be Locke and Jean on the cover I can’t understand why they’re the same height/ build? Still, TAKE MY MONEY!

  4. Story sounds great, very excited. Although I am with Johnnyboy, kind of wondering who the two people are on the cover because neither are the same build as Jean or Locke are in my head and there is no size difference between them…

  5. Yep, I’m just as excited for this as I am for Doors of Stone, the skull throne, or even the 2nd book in the kharkanas trilogy… speaking of Erikson though, I don’t think there’s a series I’m anticipating more than the Toblakai Trilogy though. Karsa Orlong deserves a whole trilogy!
