The End of Shannara (2018)

Following Shawn Speakman’s recent blog post where he wrote:

“For those who might not know, Terry is writing the Defenders of Shannara series, which comprises The High Druid’s Blade, The Darkling Child, and a third as of yet untitled book. These three books and the events within them will lead directly into the final Shannara trilogy that Terry feels should be published 2016-2018.”

Terry Brooks, 70 next year, has written a letter to fans explaining why he is finishing the series sooner rather than later. He has said:

“[I decided] to write the end of the Shannara series. I keep joking that if I don’t and die unexpectedly, Brandon Sanderson will finish it for me. He would do a good job of it, too – if Shawn didn’t get to it first. But I think I should be the one to do it. Really, it is time. I want to move on to other projects. So I have signed on with Del Rey for one last Shannara fling. I have three new Shannara lead-ups coming out this year and next, but after that I will begin writing and publishing the final three books. Yes, it will be a trilogy. Yes, these will be epic in the same way the originals were. What a surprise, huh?”

TerryBrooksTerry also explained that he was truly excited and optimistic about the coming series, explaining that the MTV deal was “[the culmination of] more than 35 years of trying to find a way to bring Shannara to the screen in some form” and he added that “Because of the nature of the agreement, I will be able to help keep the heart of the book series intact. Sure there will be a few changes, but I have every reason to believe you won’t be upset with any of it.”

Certainly, those dreading another Legend of the Seeker type show should be able to take a little solace from that final quote!

  1. I was unsure at first when I saw the previews on MTV. Then I relized it was the books. I got so excited. I have not read the books since I was in high school (1993) I just got done with reading my 1ST Fantasy books J R R Tolken. Then I started reading Terry Brooks. wahoooooo now need to turn it into a movie with all the books.
