Wednesday I got the chance to escape New Jersey and head up to New York City. This in and of itself was a treat, but on top of getting sometime away from the kids with my husband, I also got to attend a book reading by Scott Lynch and Elizabeth Bear!

We met up with my friend Mike Shackle (who told us about the event) at the reading in the KGB Bar on East 4th Street. It was a small place on the second floor of the building. There were a few tables, but by the time we got there, the room was already packed! All of the tables were full and there was barely room to move, let alone get to the bar!

We squeezed to the back of the room, where Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bear were nice enough to sign our books.

Bear & Lynch Reading - books

We ended up right in front for the reading. Mr. Lynch read chapter one from his soon to be completed novella “The Mad Baron’s Mechanical Attic,” which he said is a prequel of sorts to The Lies of Locke Lamora. It tells the tale of how the Gentlemen Bastards acquired a certain cask of liquor, which ends up being rather important in The Lies of Locke Lamora. Here is his reading in two parts.

– “The Mad Baron’s Mechanical Attic” will be published by Subterranean Press.

– Learn more about Scott Lynch’s upcoming projects on his website.

– Read Fantasy-Faction’s interview with him here.

– Read reviews of The Lies of Locke Lamora here.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t stay for Ms. Bear’s reading, because my babysitters turned into pumpkins at 10 o’clock. 🙁 But it was lovely meeting them and I did get a picture of the two of them before the show started. 🙂

  1. DAMMIT! What a damned cool reading that was. More importantly though, great to see Scott looking so happy. The lovely Miss Bear is a great match for him… the conversations and brain storming sessions they must have!

  2. Really enjoyable night and Scott went to town when he signed my books with doodles and comments. Shame the venue was so small though.

  3. Thanks guys! I’m glad the video turned out so well. 🙂 I was bummed we didn’t get to stay for Ms. Bear’s reading. I need to find babysitters that will let me stay out later. :/
